A little information about the different sizes that are available

Screened Lava Rock for the 1 1/2 inch size

Our light-weight Lava Rock has a special screening process. One that is a bit more gentler than those that are used in hard rock screening processes (like those used for hard rocks, like granite). Light-weight Lava Rock by nature is easily crushed, so the screening processes required to get the maximized larger sizes require a quick, less violent procedure. Otherwise the desired end product size would be lost to smaller screened sizes or made into sand or dust. Our most popular screened size is for the one and one half inch lava rock material which is available in both the red and black colors. The screens on the plant are sized for 1 and one half inch, which means everything that is one and one half inch in size and smaller falls though the inch and a half screen. Lava Rock is not round, like river stone or most heavy rocks, it was formed in all sizes and shapes, that is why in our inch and one half screened size you will find pieces that may be 1 and a half around but up to four inches long. This is called spearing. This happens and there is not much that can be done about it. Although this happens in every screening processes whether it is for light weight or heavy weight material it is more noticeable in the processing of Lava Rock.

Screened Lava Rock for the 1 inch size

The next screen size in this screening process is the next popular product size, one inch. All lava rock material that has fallen though the 1 and one half screen but is to big to fall though the 1 inch screen is carried away to the 1 and one half inch pile by conveyor belt. This means the 1 and one half material is between 1 inch and 1 and one half inch in size, but you to factor in the spearing process also to get a visual of the real size of the one and one half product size. The next screen the lava rock will fall though is the half inch size, this means everything that has fallen though the 1 and one half screen, the 1 inch screen and now the half screen. Everything that has fallen though the one inch screen but is to big to fall though the half inch screen is considered 1 inch material and is hauled off to the 1 inch pile via conveyor belt.

Screened Lava Rock for the 1/2 inch size

The next screen the lava rock needs to fall though is the 3/8 inch screen. So that everything that has made it though the half screen but didn't make it though the 3/8 screen is carried away to the halfinch lava rock pile. Again remember the spearing process; it continues to happen even at this screening size but is much less noticeable.

Screened Lava Rock for 3/8 minus size

The end product is loved by the Bonsai and orchid folks as well as the nursery people because of the soil conditioning nature and the micro nutrients contained with in it. ( Look up Mt. St. Helen's and what that eruption did for the Columbia river basin in Washington state. It truly was a good thing that happened, but only after all the dust had settled and people could get out and about again.) Our lava rock has sixteen different elements that plants need and love, contained within it. Our 3/8 inch minus is just that, everything that is 3/8 inch in size and smaller. (but less than 2% is under the 200 screen size. That means there is zero to none clay in it. Clay when dry is super fine grained and mostly falls though the 200 screen.) Our Lava Rock is 99.99% pure foamed obsidian, and is ph neutral. The difference between the Black and the Red lava rock is extra iron elements, thus the red color; the black material contains iron but to a mush lesser degree.
